Jamshedpur, Oct 16: Tata Steel has once again demonstrated its global leadership in industrial safety by winning the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) Safety and Health Excellence Recognition 2025 in the Process Safety Management category.

The award was conferred for the company’s pioneering project titled “Preventing Loss of Containment of Hot Metal through Safety Instrumented System in Rail-based Hot Metal Transport.”

This marks Tata Steel’s third consecutive recognition from Worldsteel, making it the only Indian steel producer to achieve this distinction consistently.

The World Steel Association annually honours member companies for exemplary initiatives that advance safety and health in the steel industry.

This year, only five projects from around the world were selected across categories such as safety culture, occupational safety, occupational health, and process safety.

Rajiv Mangal, Vice President – Safety, Health & Sustainability, Tata Steel, said, “This recognition from Worldsteel is a proud moment for all of us at Tata Steel. It reflects our steadfast commitment to strengthening process safety systems and embedding barrier-based risk management across our operations. This initiative demonstrates how innovation, automation, and workforce collaboration can together eliminate high-risk scenarios to create a safer workplace.”

Tata Steel’s award-winning project tackles one of the most critical safety challenges in steel manufacturing—the risk of derailment of torpedo ladle cars carrying molten iron, which could cause catastrophic hot metal–water explosions.

To mitigate this risk, the company implemented a first-of-its-kind Safety Instrumented System across its 62 km internal rail network.

The system combines proximity and optical sensors with an automated logic controller, effectively removing human error during track switching—the leading cause of such derailments.

The automated setup ensures real-time track alignment verification and prevents incorrect routing, ensuring safe and uninterrupted movement of molten metal carriers.
