Jamshedpur, October 14: Tata Steel Zoological Park has welcomed three tiger cubs—two females and a male—bringing cheer to wildlife enthusiasts and animal lovers in Jamshedpur.
The cubs were born to tigress Sunaina in the early hours of September 23 and are being closely monitored by the zoo’s veterinary team as they gradually settle into their new surroundings. The sire, Rudra, was brought to the Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) from the Gorewada Rescue Centre in Nagpur.
The birth marks a significant occasion for the zoo, adding three new members to its tiger family. The authorities announced the development after the cubs completed their initial period of close monitoring and care in accordance with established veterinary protocols.
Injured Cub Recovering Under Veterinary Care
The early days have brought some challenges. Sunaina, a first-time mother, inadvertently injured one of her female cubs, prompting immediate intervention by the zoo’s veterinary team.
The cub sustained skin wounds that were promptly treated with sutures. She has since shown encouraging signs of recovery and currently weighs around 1.8 kg. Although she is considered out of immediate danger, she remains under close veterinary observation to ensure a smooth recovery.
The other two cubs are reported to be doing well. The male cub weighs approximately 2.9 kg, while the second female cub weighs around 2.53 kg.
Veterinary personnel are closely monitoring all three cubs to assess their health, growth and overall well-being.
Continuous Monitoring to Ensure Cubs’ Safety
The zoo has put continuous veterinary supervision in place, supported by CCTV surveillance to monitor the cubs’ activities.
Authorities said all necessary precautions were being taken to safeguard the newborns during this crucial stage of their development.
Public Invited to Suggest Names
In an initiative to encourage public participation and strengthen its bond with the citizens of Jamshedpur, the zoo has invited people to suggest names for all three cubs.
Citizens can submit three names—one for each cub—through WhatsApp or by sending a message to +91 94382 91637.
A panel constituted by the zoo will select the three best entries. The winners will be felicitated with complimentary zoo entry passes and a memento in recognition of their participation.
The last date for submitting name suggestions is October 19.
Initiative to Promote Public Engagement with Wildlife
The naming initiative is expected to generate enthusiasm among residents, particularly children and wildlife lovers, while offering them an opportunity to connect more closely with the zoo’s conservation efforts.
Tata Steel Zoological Park has expressed hope that citizens will participate wholeheartedly in naming the newest members of its tiger family, turning the occasion into a shared celebration of wildlife and the importance of its protection.
