Thunderstorms, gusty winds to lash Jharkhand until April 12

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, April 9: Jharkhand is bracing for a spell of turbulent weather, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds forecast to impact most parts of the state through April 12, according to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi.

Isolated areas across the state—excluding north-western regions—are likely to experience thunderstorm activity on April 9, with wind speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph.

The weather is expected to become more intense on April 10 and 11, as gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely across most regions. Even north-western districts, initially expected to remain unaffected, could experience slightly lower wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph during this period.

Conditions to Ease Slightly by April 12

By April 12, the intensity of thunderstorm activity is forecast to decrease, although isolated areas—again excluding the north-west—may still see gusty winds up to 40 kmph.

Multiple Weather Systems Behind Instability

Several active weather systems are contributing to this spell of unsettled weather:

  • A trough is currently stretching from southeast Uttar Pradesh to North Bangladesh via Bihar, at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level.
  • Another trough runs from west Rajasthan to west Vidarbha, up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
  • A well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal, along with a cyclonic circulation at mid-tropospheric levels, is moving north-northwestwards and is expected to gradually shift north-northeastwards before weakening over the central Bay.

Public Advisory

Given the evolving conditions, residents across Jharkhand are advised to remain alert, stay indoors during storms, and keep up with regular updates from the IMD and local authorities.
