Agartala, Dec 26: Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen passed away on Friday morning at Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru after a prolonged battle with critical illness. He was 72.

Sen had been under advanced medical care for several months following a massive brain haemorrhage he suffered in August last year.

After the medical emergency, he underwent initial surgery in Agartala and was later airlifted to Bengaluru for specialised treatment.

Despite sustained efforts by doctors and months of intensive care, his health failed to recover.
His mortal remains are expected to be brought back to Tripura on Saturday.
A senior political figure in the state, Sen was serving as the Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly and had held the post since June 21, 2018.
He represented the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura district for four terms.

Sen began his political career with the Congress, winning two elections on its ticket, before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017.
Several leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Lok Sabha Speker Om Birla and others expressed sorrow over Sen’s passing.
