THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, March 28: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has determined that students can utilize their National Eligibility Test (NET) scores for admission to PhD programs instead of undergoing separate entrance examinations conducted by various universities and the Higher Education Information System (HEIS).

By doing away with the requirement for numerous entrance tests, this move seeks to simplify the admissions process under the National Education Policy.

“From the academic session 2024-2025, all universities can use NET scores for admission to PhD programmes in place of entrance tests conducted by the different universities and HEIs. The NTA is working on launching the NET application process for the June 2024 session sometime next week,” UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar posted on X.

UGC decides to use NET score for PhD admission on expert committee’s recommendation

UGC stated in an official notice that numerous universities administer their own entrance examinations for admission into their PhD programs, necessitating students to sit for multiple PhD entrance tests. In line with the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and to streamline the process for students, the UGC formed an expert committee to assess the regulations of the National Eligibility Test (NET) with the aim of introducing a single national entrance test for PhD admissions.

According to the notice, following the recommendations of the expert committee, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has resolved, during its 578th Meeting on March 13, 2024, that starting from the academic session 2024-25, the National Eligibility Test (NET) score can substitute the entrance tests administered by various universities and the Higher Education Information System (HEIS) for admission into PhD programs.

NET results in percentile

The notice also mentioned that the NET results will be announced in percentile, in addition to displaying the marks obtained by each candidate, enabling them to utilize these scores for PhD admission purposes.

The notice states that in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022, JRF-qualified students are admitted into the PhD program based on an interview.
