New Delhi, Sept 2: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and seven others accused of conspiring in the 2020 Delhi riots.

All of them face charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for alleged acts of terrorism.

The bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur dismissed the bail petitions of Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, Gulfisha Fatima, Athar Khan, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Mohammad Salim Khan, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Meeran Haider, and Shadab Ahmad.

In a separate order, another bench of the High Court also turned down the bail plea of Tasleem Ahmad in the same case.

The accused had argued before the court that they had been in jail for nearly five years without trial proceedings having begun.

They cited the example of Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, who were granted bail in the same case, and urged that similar relief be extended to them as well.

The petitions were filed before the High Court after the trial court refused to grant bail. Following hearings on July 9, the High Court had reserved its verdict.

According to Delhi Police, the accused were part of a larger conspiracy behind the communal violence that broke out in February 2020 during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
