Dhanbad, Jan 2: Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth will be the chief guest at the 35th martyrdom day tribute meeting of late Dhanbad Superintendent of Police (SP) Randhir Prasad Verma, scheduled to be held on Friday, January 3.

President of the Randhir Verma Memorial Society, Kishore Kumar, said the tribute meeting will be held at Randhir Verma Chowk from 10 am.

Dhanbad MP Dhulu Mahto will preside over the programme, while Dhanbad Sadar MLA Raj Sinha and Jharia MLA Ragni Singh will attend as guests of honour.

Armed police salute before programme

Before the start of the tribute meeting, personnel of the District Armed Force will pay a salute to the martyr, marking the solemn occasion.

Martyred while foiling bank robbery in 1991

The then SP Randhir Prasad Verma was killed on January 3, 1991, while single-handedly confronting five terrorists supporting the Khalistan movement. He was attempting to foil a Bank of India, Hirapur branch robbery at around 11 am.

Armed only with his service revolver, Verma challenged the terrorists, who were equipped with AK-47 rifles. For his exceptional courage, he was later awarded the Ashok Chakra posthumously.

Cultural programme and family presence

Kishore Kumar also informed that renowned Sufi singers, the Bharti Brothers, will perform on the occasion.

Former four-time Dhanbad MP Prof Rita Verma, wife of martyr Randhir Prasad Verma, will also be present to pay floral tributes.
