Dehradun, Jan 10: To lighten the burden of books on kids, the Uttarakhand government has planned to institute 10 ‘bag-free’ days per academic session in all of the state’s schools.

An official release stated that all upper primary and secondary schools, from class 6 to class 12, will observe one bag-free day on the last Saturday of every month during the academic year.

Focus on holistic, skill development

In alignment with the 2020 National Education Policy, the program has been implemented. On these designated days, students will attend school without carrying books and participate in activities aligned with their interests and abilities, the release stated.

On the “bag-free” days, children will learn about soil management, machine learning, calligraphy, woodworking, pottery, welding, casting, stitching, health education and robotics.

About the initiative Uttarakhand Education Minister, Dhan Singh Rawat, stated, “The decision has been taken for the all-round development of school children so that apart from their studies they can also upgrade their special skills for which they have an inborn talent.”

Commencing in April

The program is currently in place in Uttarakhand’s primary schools, where students are free to engage in any activities they like on these days, known as “Pratibha Diwas.”

Numerous parent-teacher associations have praised the state government’s decision as a major step in the direction of students’ overall development.

On Tuesday, the state education minister gave the green light to a departmental proposal to implement bag-free days in all schools across the state. Officials mentioned that the implementation process will commence once a government order is issued in this regard. The introduction of bag-free days is scheduled to begin from the forthcoming academic session starting in April, as per officials.
