Veteran advocate Fali S Nariman passes away aged 95, PM Modi and others express grief

New Delhi, Feb 21: Renowned legal expert and esteemed senior advocate Fali S. Nariman passed away at the age of 95 on Wednesday in New Delhi.

The ex-Additional Solicitor General of India passed away at his home at approximately 1 am today.

Who is Fali S Nariman?

Nariman, born into a Parsi family in Myanmar on January 10, 1929, commenced his legal career at the Bombay High Court in 1950.

The Padma Bhushan was conferred upon the constitutional lawyer and jurist in 1991, followed by the Padma Vibhushan in 2007.

One of the significant legal cases associated with Nariman is the verdict on the National Judicial Appointments Commission, among several other landmark cases.

From 1999 to 2005, he served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

PM Modi offers condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the distinguished jurist and senior advocate Fali S. Nariman on Wednesday, hailing him as one of the most remarkable legal luminaries. Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to Nariman’s family during this time of loss.

“Shri Fali Nariman Ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens. I am pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace,” PM Modi stated in an X post.

Bench led by CJI pays tribute

The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also paid tribute to the distinguished jurist and senior advocate. The CJI expressed condolences over Nariman’s passing, acknowledging him as a towering figure in the legal realm, stating, “We mourn passing away of Mr. Fali Nariman. He was a great giant of law. It’s very sad.”

Solicitor General mourns loss

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta described Fali Nariman’s passing as a loss not only to the legal community but also to the nation as a whole.

“Not only the legal fraternity but the nation has lost a towering figure of intellect and wisdom. The country has lost an epitome of what righteousness stood for. A doyen, paragon and a legend in his own lifetime has left us leaving the jurisprudence enriched by his immense contribution. I have always learnt something new by merely appearing even against him,” Mehta stated.

Kapil Sibal expresses grief

In a message shared on X, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal lamented the passing of Fali Nariman as a significant loss for India.

“A great son of India passes away. Not just one of the greatest lawyers of our country but one of the finest human beings who stood like a colossus above all. The corridors of the court will never be the same without him. May his soul rest in peace,” Kapil Sibal stated.
