“I am very happy to share that Shri LK Advani Ji will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. I also spoke to him and congratulated him on being conferred this honour. One of the most respected statesmen of our times, his contribution to the development of India is monumental. His is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister. He distinguished himself as our Home Minister and I&B Minister as well. His Parliamentary interventions have always been exemplary, full of rich insights,” PM Modi posted on X.

Who is LK Advani?

Advani was born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, Pakistan. He has been the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party since its founding in 1980, holding the position for the longest.

Advani’s reputation is built on his strong morals, remarkable intelligence, and unrelenting commitment to the vision of an India that is powerful and prosperous.

LK Advani dedicated the latter part of the 1980s and the early 1990s to the solitary goal of transforming the BJP into a major national political force.

The 1989 General Election demonstrated the fruits of his labours. The Party achieved an astounding 86 seats, a far cry from its 1984 total of just two. The Party gained 121 seats in 1992 and 161 seats in 1996, marking a turning point in Indian democracy in the 1996 elections. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Lok Sabha, deposing the Congress for the first time since gaining independence.
