New Delhi, Oct 22: Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar formally took charge as the new chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Rahatkar is the ninth chairperson of the National Commission for Women, with her tenure commencing immediately. She replaces Rekha Sharma, whose term concluded in August of this year.

Rahatkar held the position of Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women from 2016 to 2021 and served as the Mayor of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar from 2007 to 2010.
Rahatkar has a bachelor’s degree in Physics and a master’s degree in History from the University of Pune. She has written multiple books, including ‘Vidhilikhit’, which addresses women’s legal issues, and ‘Aurangabad: Leading to Wide Roads’.
Her efforts in promoting women’s empowerment have been acknowledged with several honours, including the National Law Award and the Savitribai Phule Award from a national literary council.
