Vikram Misri assumes role as new foreign secretary of India

New Delhi, July 15: Veteran diplomat Vikram Misri, recognized as a leading expert on China and national security, took over as India’s new Foreign Secretary on Monday.

Misri who took over from Vinay Kwatra is a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer and was previously held the position of the Deputy National Security Advisor.

He has held numerous positions at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), worked in the Prime Minister’s Office, and served in various Indian missions across Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America.

He is uniquely distinguished by having served as private secretary to three Prime Ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.

Misri served as India’s Ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021 before being appointed as Deputy NSA.

Misri is considered to have had a key role in the negotiations between India and China in the aftermath of the significant tensions caused by the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020.
