New Delhi, August 8: After being disqualified in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from the sport.

On Thursday morning, she disclosed her decision in a post on X.

“Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness,” Phogat posted on X.

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified after reaching the finals of the women’s 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics after her weight was found to be slightly above the set standard, which dashed her dreams of winning a gold medal and competing in the final.

Vinesh has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification from the Olympic final. She has requested to be awarded a shared silver medal.

Phogat reached the gold medal match after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday night. She was scheduled to face the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold but was disqualified on Wednesday for exceeding the weight limit.
