North 24 Parganas, Feb 29: West Bengal police arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan on Thursday morning amid unrest in Sandeshkhali over claims of “sexual assault and land grab,” officials stated.
Later, after being produced in Basirhat Court, he was sent to 10-day police custody.
SDPO of Minakhan Aminul Islam Khan said, “Shahjahan was arrested from Minakhan in the North 24 Parganas district.”
He was finally arrested after being on the run for 55 days.
He was apprehended at a residence located in Minakhan, roughly 30 kilometres from Sandeshkhali Island on the outskirts of Sunderbans, within the North 24 Parganas district.

Attack on ED officers, allegations of land grab and sexual assault by women
This month, Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal has experienced extensive demonstrations against TMC figure Shahjahan Sheikh, with some women demanding justice for purported abuses attributed to the TMC leader.
According to senior police officer Supratim Sarkar, the Trinamool leader has been apprehended in connection with an incident involving the assault of Enforcement Directorate officers during a raid on January 5th.
Shajahan Sheikh and his close associates were accused by a significant number of women in Sandeshkhali of land-grab and sexual assault.
Basirhat Court orders 10-day police custody
Meanwhile, Basirhat Court in West Bengal ordered a 10-day police custody for Shahjahan on Thursday.
Shahjahan’s legal representative Raja Bhowmick stated, “14-day police custody (of Sheikh Shahjahan) was demanded, but the court allowed 10-day custody.”
“On March 10, he will be produced in court again,” he added.
