Jamshedpur, Nov 1: A wild elephant was found lying dead at a cornfield near a forest stretch under the Chakulia Thana area in the Ghatsila sub-division of the East Singhbhum district on Wednesday.
The tusker is said to have died of electrocution, something which has claimed two elephants’ life in the East Singhbhum and adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan districts within the past 33 days.
The wild elephant was found lying dead in the cornfield in Jwalabhanga village in Chakulia, about 70 km away from the steel city.
Getting information about the pachyderm’s death, Chandil forest range officer, Digvijay Singh reached the spot and ensured the postmortem of the dead tusker.
“We were aware that a middle-aged wild elephant was limping around near the Jwalabhanga jungle for the past two days. During the investigation, we were told by the villagers that the tusker had fallen terribly sick due to electrocution. We had tried to locate the sick elephant to provide it with the necessary treatment, but unfortunately, we could not find it, ” claimed the range officer while talking to TheJharkhandStory.co.in
Earlier on September 28, a considerably aged wild elephant was found lying dead at a cornfield in the Chandil Thana area in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, about 40 km away from Jamshedpur and 110 km away from Chakulia where one more wild elephant was killed today.
Like the elephant that died today, the elephant which died in Chandil over a month ago had also been electrocuted.
It is suspected that as several herds of wild elephants migrate into forest stretches in East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharawan districts, some villagers might have laid electric lines across their corn fields to prevent the elephants from damaging the paddy fields.
