New Delhi, Oct 6: Scientists Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday for “their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance,” the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced.

This year’s medicine prize, the first of six Nobel awards, recognized research explaining how the body prevents the immune system from attacking its own tissues while targeting foreign invaders.

“Their discoveries have laid the foundation for a new field of research and spurred the development of new treatments, for example for cancer and autoimmune diseases,” the Nobel committee said in a statement.

Since its inception in 1901, the Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded 115 times to 229 laureates. Last year, Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun shared the prize for their work on microRNA.

The Nobel Prize is part of an annual series honoring extraordinary achievements in physics, chemistry, literature, and peace, each accompanied by a monetary award of around 1.2 million and global recognition.
Following the medicine announcement, the Nobel prizes for physics, chemistry, and literature will be revealed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday respectively, with the Peace Prize on Friday and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics on October 13.
