New Delhi, Feb 27: The Supreme Court rebuked Patanjali Ayurved, led by yoga guru Ramdev, on Tuesday for apparently breaching the commitment it made in court regarding its products and assertions regarding their medicinal benefits.

A notice was issued to Patanjali Ayurved and its managing director by a bench of justices Hima Kohli and Amanullah, seeking an explanation as to why contempt proceedings should not be brought against them.

The Supreme Court has issued a contempt of court notice to Patanjali Ayurved and Acharya Balakrishnan for their role in disseminating deceptive advertisements across multiple media channels. They have been given a three-week timeframe to reply to the notice.

The bench also warned Patanjali Ayurved and its executives against making any statements in the media, whether print or electronic, that could be detrimental to any system of medicine, as they had pledged in their previous undertaking before the court.

Last year, on November 21, the company’s legal representative had assured the Supreme Court that there would be no further breaches of the law, particularly concerning the advertising or branding of products. Additionally, they pledged that no informal statements asserting the medicinal effectiveness of Patanjali products or criticizing any system of medicine would be disseminated to the media in any manner.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court issued a warning to the herbal product company, which Ramdev co-founded, about not making “false” and “misleading” assurances in their advertisements regarding the curing of various ailments using their medicines.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is presenting a case to the Supreme Court stating that Ramdev launched a smear campaign against the vaccination campaign and contemporary medicines.
