Ranchi, March 5: On World Engineering Day, the civil engineering department of BIT Sindri and the Institution of Engineers (IE) Dhanbad chapter jointly held a seminar on sustainable development.
Dr Avinash Singh, Assistant Professor of the Civil Engineering department at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, was the chief guest on the occasion. He shed light on the significance of engineering and resource utilisation in meeting present needs without compromising the future.
How to replace building materials?
He stressed exploring how to replace building materials in India with minimal environmental impact.
The host BIT Sindri civil engineering department HoD, Prof Jeetu Kujur, outlined the programme and announced the day’s theme.
UNO’s goal
While welcoming the guests and experts, Prof Kujur said that the seminar aims to achieve UNO’s goal. The theme of World Engineering Day 2024 is ‘Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World’. So, we must work on reducing greenhouse emissions, he added.

Building Construction
He said it is challenging to reduce building construction and cement production waste and find alternative solutions for fly ash and other materials. “We use air and water, and for the sake of future generations, we must use them balanced,” said Prof Kujur.
Prof Vikrama Pandey emphasised engineers’ vital role in global sustainable development, creating progress without harming the environment.
Institution of Engineers
While addressing the seminar, Prof. Biswajit Paul, joint secretary of the Institution of Engineers, elaborated on the current necessity of coal in global development and outlined its associated harms and potential alternatives.
Prof Brahmadev Yadav, associate professor in the civil engineering department, presented souvenirs to guests and expert speakers at the seminar.

BIT Career Development Centre
BIT Career Development Centre (CDC) also celebrated World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development separately.
While addressing as chief speaker, CDC Chairman Prof Ghanshyam said that engineers have the opportunity to highlight the achievements of engineers and engineering in our modern world and improve public understanding of their contributions.
“This year’s theme for World Engineering Day is “Engineering Solutions for a Sustainable World. It emphasises the critical role engineers play in developing sustainable energy solutions. As we face an energy crisis and the urgent need for sustainable energy sources, the engineering community will lead the way in developing innovative solutions to create a better and more sustainable future,” he said.
