Kolkata, March 18: Jharkhand’s famous eye doctor, Dr. B.P. Kashyap, was awarded the honorary degree of FAICO in the field of Vitreo-retina at the inaugural ceremony of the 82nd annual conference of the All India Eye Society, held in Kolkata on March 15.

Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan

Swami Nityakamananda, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, gave away the award.

This honorary title is given to selected vitreo-retina surgeons in the country to recognise their work in the retina field.

He began retina treatment in 1984

Notably, in 1984, Dr B.P. Kashyap started retina treatment for the first time in Jharkhand (then Bihar). At that time, he was the only retina surgeon in Bihar. From 1984 to 2004, he was the only retina surgeon in Jharkhand and Bihar. Today in Jharkhand, all the new technologies, machines, treatment methods, research, training, etc., are available in the field of the retina; the credit for bringing them all to Jharkhand goes to Dr BP Kashyap.

Among these, in 2003, he cured the retina of the eyes of premature children. He introduced the world’s most modern Constellation Machine for Retina Surgery in 2009. He also introduced Intravitreal Injection for Retina Treatment in 2006 and the Electrophysiology Machine in 2018.

First clinical trial of retina medicines

Dr Kashyap is also credited with bringing in Jharkhand’s first clinical trial of retina medicines in 2021 and opening Jharkhand’s first nationally recognised retina training facility in 2022.

With Dr Kashyap’s honorary degree award at the national level, Jharkhand has emerged in golden letters on the eye health map of India.
