Jharkhand News: Congress asks govt to withdraw power tariff hike

Dhanbad, March 20:  Chairman of the Jharkhand State Congress Disciplinary Committee cum vice-president Brajendra Prasad Singh has asked the state government to take back the decision on the power tariff hike.

Power tariff hike not justified: Singh  

Singh has said that the Jharkhand government’s decision to increase power tariffs at the time of the election was not justified in any way. “On the one hand, the central government is making announcements of tempting facilities, and on the other hand, the state government has hiked power tariffs for people,” he added.

“So, I urge the Jharkhand government to reconsider its decision on increasing power tariff,” said  Singh, whose statement is significant as the Congress is a major coalition partner of the Mahagathbandan government led by the JMM.

Rs 6.30 per unit for urban consumers

Jharkhand Bijili Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) increased the urban domestic power tariff by  25 paise per unit and the commercial power tariff by 15 paise per unit from the   2023-24 financial year.

At present, urban domestic consumers have to pay Rs 6.30 per unit, and with the increased tariff, they will have to pay Rs 6.55 per unit.

Similarly, at present, commercial consumers have to pay Rs 7.51  per unit, and in increased tariff, they will have to pay Rs 7.66  per unit.

Brajendra Prasad Singh said the state government at least for the time being can defer the decision of increasing tariff.  He said the state government has launched many welfare schemes such as Abuwa Avas and others.  Under the leadership of Chief Minister Champai Soren, the government is running in the right direction, but officials are not cooperating with him, he added.
