Dhanbad, March 20: Altogether, 222 meritorious students of the district were given the Jyoti Fellowship award at a function held at JRD Tata Auditorium Jamadoba.

Sanjay Rajoria, general manager of the Jharia Division, Tata Steel, was the chief guest at the function organised by the Tata Steel Foundation. Certificates and school bags were also distributed among the awardees.

Addressing the function, Sanjay Rajoria congratulated the students on their remarkable achievements. He said that the Fellowship is an initiative of Tata Steel Foundation that motivates students and encourages them to pursue higher education to build a strong career path for a better future.

“As I acknowledge this significant accomplishment of the awardees, I urge to work harder and grow into responsible citizens in the coming years,” he said.

Other persons present at the function were Narendra Kumar Gupta, chief (Jamadoba Group); Col. Bhawani Singh Nirwan, head (Administration); Pankaj Kumar Das, head HRBP; Sujit Kumar Jha, senior area manager (security), Tata Steel, and Rajesh Kumar, unit lead, Tata Steel Foundation Jamadoba.

Jyoti Fellowship initiative

An official said the Jyoti Fellowship initiative is the flagship project of the Tata Steel Foundation, started in 1974-75. It aims to support meritorious students from backward communities from the seventh class up to post-graduation.

Financial assistance to students

The Fellowship provides financial assistance to students according to their class level to help them in their studies and enable them to achieve their educational and career aspirations.

In 2023-24, 771 students were awarded the Jyoti Fellowship, with 534 belonging to Scheduled Castes and 237 to Scheduled Tribes.

Geographically, 233 candidates are from Jamadoba, 276 from Sijua, 163 from Tundi, and 99 from the East Tundi area.

Of the total 771 students, 301 are males and 470 are females.
