New Delhi, March 29: The Income Tax Department has sent the Congress party a demand notice for Rs 1823 crore.

The newly issued demand notice covers assessment years 2017-18 to 2020-21 and incorporates penalties and interest charges.

The party’s appeal against the Income Tax Department’s order to initiate reassessment procedures against it for the years 2017–18, 2018–19, 2019–20, and 2020–21 was rejected earlier this week by the Delhi High Court.

Congress questions IT dept’s double standards, slams BJP

Reacting to this, Congress on Friday slammed the Income Tax Department, alleging double standards. They claimed that while the Congress was penalized for a violation worth Rs 14 lakh, the authorities remained silent on a Rs 42 crore violation by the BJP. Congress further stated that violations by the ruling party, amounting to Rs 4,600 crore, had not incurred penalties.

Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Ajay Maken said at a press conference that attempts were made to financially cripple the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Jairam Ramesh charged that the administration of the BJP was engaging in “tax terrorism” and voiced hypocrisy.

“Through the electoral bond scam, the BJP collected over Rs 8,200 crore as donation. There were different routes, there was a prepaid bribe route, there was post-paid bribe route, there was post raid group ‘chanda-dhandha, raid-paid’, and there was a shell company route,” he stated.

Delhi HC affirmed ITAT decision, rejected Congress’ pleas on income tax notice

On Thursday, the Division Bench of Justices Yashwant Verma and Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav dismissed four pleas from the Congress in a manner consistent with its previous ruling, which dismissed similar pleas from the Congress party with regard to the three-year reassessment proceedings.

The Delhi High Court recently affirmed the decision of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), which declined to grant a stay on the Income Tax notice demanding over Rs 105 crore in outstanding taxes from the Congress party.

While endorsing the ITAT’s ruling, the Court allowed the Congress party to approach the appellate tribunal again to address their concerns.
