Jharkhand News: Physical activity crucial in managing Parkinson’s disease, says Dr Arun Kumar

Jamshedpur, April 11: Dr Arun Kumar, senior consultant – Neurology at Brahmananda Narayana Hospital, Tamolia in Jamshedpur emphasized the importance of physical activity and exercise in managing Parkinson’s disease.

He highlighted that symptoms like trembling hands or legs, difficulty in body control, and involuntary movements could indicate Parkinson’s disease and stressed the role of exercise in preventing it.

Dr Kumar explained that Parkinson’s disease affects nerve cells in the brain responsible for controlling activities, leading to issues like tremors and muscle stiffness.

He mentioned that regular aerobic exercises could reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease according to some research findings.

Men more prone to Parkinson’s disease than women

Dr Kumar pointed out that individuals with a significant loss of dopamine-producing cells were prone to Parkinson’s symptoms, affecting around 60,000 new cases annually.

Although typically diagnosed after the age of 55, the disease could also impact those aged 30-40 years, with men being more susceptible than women.

In addressing Parkinson’s disease, Dr Kumar highlighted the importance of managing symptoms and improving quality of life through medication and therapy.

He concluded that physical activity played a crucial role in mitigating the progression of the disease and enhancing overall well-being.
