Dhanbad, April 12: The Election Commission has appointed Dhanbad’s transgender Sweta Singh, 25, as a ‘State Icon’ to enhance vote percentage in the Lok Sabha election across the State.
Sweta Singh is a resident of Jharia
Jharia resident Sweta Singh is upbeat and feels honoured to be responsible for campaigning across the State to raise voter awareness.
“For now, I have begun campaigning in the Dhanbad and Jharia segments, where the voting percentage was very low in the 2019 Lok Sabha election in the State. But I am prepared to move to other state constituencies wherever the EC directs me to campaign,” she said.
Sweta Singh said her responsibility is manageable, as most people are educated. “I visit house to house in the lane and areas of Dhanbad, Jharia and encourage them to vote for their choice of party and candidate. I get their promise to turn up at the booth and then move another house,” she said.

Sweta was frightened when police called up
12th passed, Sweta Singh said she became frightened when a police station officer called her and gave an assignment letter of ‘State Icon’ for awareness of people to increase vote percentage in Jharkhand. “Since I could not understand the letter properly, the police station officer in charge informed her in detail and said she would have to go among people,” Sweta Singh said.
However, her confidence touched sky-high when she was called to share the dais with Dhanbad deputy commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra and Town Commissioner cum Sveep Cell in-charge Raviraj Sharma in an election-related programme.
“I will leave no stone unturned in convincing and encouraging the people to go for the vote not only in Dhanbad and Jharia but also across the state,” said Sweta Singh.
