Daltonganj, April 23: Water woes have gripped Medinirai Medical College in Daltonganj so much that mess runners of boys’ hostel and girls’ hostel have begun to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in Pattals (disposable plates made of tree leaves).
Sanjay Kumar and Suman Kumar who run the mess for the boys and girls hostels here in this medical college said, “We took to the Pattal to serve food to the students just because we don’t have sufficient water to wash dishes. Huge gallons of water go into dishwashing. That we are trying to save by replacing plates with Pattal.”
The mess runners have done wise by saving water from dish washing and using it to help cook food for around 392 students, dozens of junior and senior residents and for its own cooking crew.
The idea is not bad. Eating in a leafy plate is never unwelcome as families do it in Tilak ceremony or in Bhoj which is a post death rite. Nobody objects to using Pattal.
Pattals are far more eco-friendly. It is decayable over a small period of time. Again the use of Pattal helps poor women who sell it for eking out a living for themselves.

However here in this medical college the use of Pattal for serving food indicates the enormity of the water crisis.
Principal of the medical college Dr Kamender Prasad said there is a severe issue of water and electricity. The electricity supply is erratic. It affects water management.
The medical college pays 60 lakh plus holding taxes every financial year to the Medininagar Municipal Corporation but in terms of water supply this highest tax paying institution suffers most.
Principal Dr Kamender Prasad said he would be writing to the city commissioner of the Medininagar municipal corporation to provide him with a couple of water tankers to meet the water crisis here.
The medical college management is accused of bullying its students if the students raise even the most genuine problems like water and electricity. The college management treats such a voice raiser among the students as a rebel.
It is confidentially found that the medical college management tries to keep its students stifled. Any student who raises any issue is seen as a back bencher making noises to draw attention towards him or her.
The medical college is to impose and maintain discipline but in this time of crisis it should not thumb down its students who suffer agony in summer for no fault of theirs.
Days are hot and nights are painful just for power supply in this medical college.
