PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 20: President of Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Vijay Anand Moonka met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s election rally at Ghatshila yesterday and handed over a four-point charter of demand on various local issues.

Through the letter, the trade body chief sought the attention of the Prime Minister towards the long pending demand for an airport in Jamshedpur, availability of higher education, availability of good medical facilities, investments for big industrial establishments in Jamshedpur and also setting- up of big factories under the Government of India.

The letter described the issues in various points.

Establishment of an airport in Jamshedpur

It has been more than 100 years since Jamshedpur was established. Over the years Jamshedpur emerged as an industrial city along with the economic capital of Jharkhand state.

But, still today its overall development has not taken place. For this, it is very important to establish an airport in Jamshedpur.

More than 1,300 large, medium and small industries are established here. But the airport has not been constructed yet due to which the general public coming here has to go to other cities like Ranchi or Kolkata to catch a flight which becomes troublesome and a waste of time.

Due to unavailability of airport, the development of Jamshedpur has almost come to a standstill. Due to the absence of an airport new investors not coming here, new businesses and industries are not coming to Jamshedpur.

Availability of higher education in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur lacks big educational institutions for higher education.

Jamshedpur is known as a mini metro. But the students migrate from Jamshedpur to other cities of the country for higher education facilities, quality PG studies after graduation, and even national-level graduation studies.

Due to the lack of higher educational institutions here, students migrate and most of them do not return back to Jamshedpur and in search of good jobs, they settle in big cities of the country and this leads to the migration of the experienced workforce.

This is also a major reason for Jamshedpur not being able to develop. Due to the lack of big colleges in and around Jamshedpur, lakhs of rupees spent on higher education and state money and revenue are playing a strong role in the development of other states and Jamshedpur is not getting anything from it.

Availability of higher medical facilities in Jamshedpur

In the present context, the way people are suffering from diseases, there is an urgent need for good and multi-super speciality hospitals for higher medical facilities in or around Jamshedpur.

Due to this people depend on other cities of the country for higher and specialised medical treatment.

In the absence of super and multi-specialty hospitals for treatment of various types of complex diseases, people go to other states and big cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Due to which people’s transportation expenses also increase and the state stands to lose out its revenue.

Establishment of large industries and drawing big investments

The most important thing in the development of any city or state is the establishment of large industries.

The number of small and medium scale industrial units here are many as they serve ancillary units. Due to this proper industrial development is not taking place here.

The industrial development here will progress rapidly only after the establishment of other big industries, establishments of four-wheeler, two-wheeler, three-wheeler vehicles and government undertakings like manufacturing of railway spare parts.

The environment here is also favourable for industries. The establishment of large industries will also increase the revenue of the Centre and state government, which will play an important role in making the country the world’s third-largest economy and realizing the dreams of a developed India.
