EC reports 62.2% turnout in fifth phase of LS polls in latest data; women lead voting

New Delhi, May 20: The Election Commission announced on Thursday that voter turnout for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections held on May 20 has increased to 62.2 per cent, with women outnumbering men.

As per an EC statement, 61.48 per cent of registered male voters turned out to vote, while the turnout for female voters was 63 per cent.

The Election Commission indicated that repolling at two polling stations in the Kandhamal parliamentary constituency in Odisha will be finalized on Thursday. The figures may be subject to change once the data is updated following the post-repolling procedure.

Voting on 49 LS seats in fifth phase

In the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting took place on 49 Lok Sabha seats in six states and two union territories.

The 49 Lok Sabha seats included 14 from Uttar Pradesh, 13 from Maharashtra, seven from West Bengal, five from Bihar, three from Jharkhand, five from Odisha, one from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir and one from Ladakh.

Wide male-female turnout gap in Bihar and Jharkhand

In Bihar, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh, the voter turnout among women was higher than that of men.

The turnout gap between men and women was substantial in Bihar and Jharkhand. In Bihar, male turnout was 52.42 per cent, while female turnout was significantly higher at 61.58 per cent.

Likewise, in Jharkhand, male turnout was recorded at 58.08 per cent, while female turnout was notably higher at 68.65 per cent.

8.95 crore were eligible to cast votes in fifth phase

Around 8.95 crore people, comprising 4.69 crore men, 4.26 crore women, and 5409 members of the third gender, were eligible to vote in the fifth phase.

9 lakh 47 thousand employees were deployed at 94732 polling stations set up in six states and two union territories.
