Rajgir, June 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Nalanda University campus in Bihar’s Rajgir on Wednesday.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha, along with other delegates, were in attendance at the new Nalanda University campus.

The event was also attended by ambassadors from 17 different countries.

The educational institution was founded under the Nalanda University Act in 2010 and commenced operations in 2014.

The campus includes two academic blocks housing 40 classrooms, accommodating approximately 1900 seats in total. It features two auditoriums, each seating 300 people, along with a student hostel capable of housing around 550 students. Additional amenities comprise an international center, an amphitheater with a capacity for up to 2000 individuals, a faculty club, and a sports complex, among other facilities.

The campus operates as a ‘Net Zero’ Green Campus, sustaining itself through solar plants, domestic and drinking water treatment facilities, a water recycling plant for wastewater reuse, 100 acres of water bodies, and various other eco-friendly amenities.

Before the campus inauguration, Prime Minister Modi toured the ruins of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara earlier this morning.

According to experts, the ancient Nalanda University, which thrived from the fifth century onwards, drew students from across the globe and prospered for 800 years until it was destroyed by invaders in the 12th century.
