Daltonganj, August 5: 17 marooned people, including 5 women and 1 child were successfully rescued by the NDRF Patna team in Garhwa district today.

Garhwa DC Shekhar Jamuar said these 17 people were marooned by the swelling Sone River.

The locale was Lohargara village under Harihurpur police station of Ketar block in Garhwa district.

Distress call to Garhwa DC

The DC said, “Last night we got a distress call. It was for rescue. 17 people were marooned. They have had their houses on the highland amid the Sone River.”

Shekhar Jamuar said the river Sone was swelling. It was because of the huge cusecs of water released from the Kanhar barrage that falls under UP’s Sonebhadra district.

“The UP counterpart did not communicate to us in Jharkhand about the release of the huge cusecs of water. Had we been informed well in advance we would have evacuated these people much earlier,” added Jamuar.

Garhwa SP Deepak Kumar Pandey also on alert

Garhwa SP Deepak Kumar Pandey and his team remained alert all night and coordinated with the rescue operation.

The NDRF team finally arrived at 5 sharp this morning and evacuated 17 people.

Shekhar Jamuar said he spoke to the Rohtas (Bihar) DM also in this regard. Back here in Jharkhand state secretary Disaster Management Amitabh Kaushal was apprised of the situation.

This correspondent spoke to Secretary of State Disaster Management Amitabh Kaushal who said, “We kept monitoring the situation till late post-midnight. We got the NDRF team from Patna.”

NDRF team rushed from Patna

Amitabh Kaushal explained why the NDRF team was to be brought down from Patna saying “From Patna the place from where the rescue was to be done was 210 km by road while from Ranchi it was 270 km. We decided to have the NDRF team from the shorter distance and it was Patna.”

It was a team effort of all from our top bosses in the state machinery down to Bihta in Patna for the rescue of the 17 people, reiterated DC Shekhar Jamuar.
