New Delhi, September 6: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the petition of the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh challenging the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation into alleged financial irregularities by him to the CBI.

The Supreme Court rejected his request to be made a party in a case alleging financial misconduct during his tenure at the institution.

On August 23, the Calcutta High Court directed that the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities be transferred from the state-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra stated that, as an accused, Ghosh has no legal standing to be included in the plea.

“As an accused you have no locus to intervene in the PIL, where the Calcutta high court is monitoring the investigation,” the bench stated.

On August 9, a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found dead with injuries in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. An autopsy later revealed that she had been raped before being murdered. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in custody.

The incident has triggered protests across the country.
