Dhanbad, Sept 13: Prof. Tapan Kumar Gandhi of IIT Delhi argued that natural intelligence (NI) surpasses artificial intelligence (AI) in handling complex situations.

Speaking at a lecture titled “Unlocking Artificial Intelligence and Serving Mankind” at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad, Prof. Gandhi, Cadence Chair Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Delhi, highlighted that the AI systems currently in use are limited. He noted that he has yet to encounter an AI system that performs better than human intelligence.

The event, part of IIT ISM’s lecture series, was held at the Penman Auditorium. IIT ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra also addressed the audience.

Indian roads not suitable for autonomous vehicles

Prof. Gandhi expressed scepticism about the feasibility of autonomous vehicles in India. He explained that the country’s heavy traffic and widespread disregard for traffic rules pose significant challenges. “Autonomous vehicles are designed to operate under ideal conditions, where traffic rules are strictly observed,” he said.

Prof. Gandhi stated that AI lacks adaptability when confronted with real-life challenges. Using an example, he explained how drivers use their brains to handle unexpected situations, such as dealing with obstacles, erratic behaviour from other road users and unexpected challenges coming on the road from the wrong side. This ability stems from natural intelligence, which allows humans to respond effectively to unforeseen challenges.

The program also featured remarks from IIT ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, who discussed various aspects of quality research publication and provided insights into research article writing.

The event was attended by Prof. MK Singh, Dean of Academic Affairs; Prof. Alok Kumar Das, Dean of IIE; Prof. Sagar Pal, Dean of R&D; and other faculty members.
