Internet shut in UP’s Bahraich; police use lathi charge, tear gas after protesters vandalize shops

Bahraich, Oct 14: In Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, police deployed tear gas and carried out a lathi charge to disperse protesters after a person was killed in a violent clash during Durga idol immersion in Mahasi the previous day.

Security has been heightened in the area following protests in which demonstrators vandalized shops in the markets and set fire to a hospital and pharmacy shops.

On Sunday, a clash between two communities during a Durga idol immersion procession in the Mahasi area resulted in one death and left several others injured.

Meanwhile, the DM has directed the suspension of internet services in Bahraich.

30 persons taken into custody

Police have reported that 30 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the incident in Mahasi’s Maharajganj area, and a search is underway for the main accused.

The incident took place on October 13, when an argument erupted between the two groups as the procession passed through a Muslim area, according to the police.

Vrinda Shukla, the Bahraich Superintendent of Police, explained that during a procession passing by a Masjid in Mahasi’s Maharajganj area, an argument erupted between two groups, leading to the shooting death of a person from the Hindu community and creating a tense atmosphere.

She noted that the Visarjan was halted in various locations, which allowed some troublemakers to exploit the situation and incite disturbances. Following the incident, 30 individuals have been taken into custody, and a case has been registered. The police are actively searching for the main accused, who is currently on the run.

The SP reported that a case has been registered against a man named Salman, from whose residence, which also serves as a shop, gunshots were fired.
