New Delhi, Oct 21: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected Arvind Kejriwal’s petition against the Gujarat High Court’s decision, which had declined to dismiss the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case by Gujarat University over his remarks related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree.

A Gujarat Metropolitan court had issued summons to Kejriwal and AAP leader Sanjay Singh in the defamation case concerning their purportedly derogatory remarks regarding Prime Minister Modi’s educational degrees and qualifications.

A bench consisting of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S.V.N. Bhatti observed that another bench of the Supreme Court had dismissed a plea from AAP leader Sanjay Singh, a co-accused in the same case, on April 8.

“We must have a consistent approach. Having regard to that view, we would not like to entertain the present plea. The same is dismissed,” the bench stated.

The Supreme Court clarified that all arguments remain open for consideration during the trial and refrained from commenting on the merits of the case.

The defamation case against the politicians was filed by Gujarat University Registrar Piyush Patel due to their alleged remarks following the Gujarat High Court’s decision to overturn an order from the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) regarding the disclosure of information about Modi’s degrees under the Right to Information Act.
