Dhanbad, Dec 10: The Civil Engineering Department of BIT Sindri hosted a workshop on “Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in Research,” drawing participation from experts and students alike.
Sponsored by the Jharkhand Council on Science, Technology, and Innovation (JCSTI), Ranchi, the event highlighted the transformative potential of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in various fields.
Insights from experts
On the second day, the workshop featured notable speakers, including Dr. Maya RajNarayan Ray, Associate Professor at BIT Sindri, Dr. Vikas Kumar Vidyarthi, Assistant Professor at NIT Rourkela, Dr. Sucharita Pradhan, a scientist at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), OUAT Bhubaneswar, and Satiprasad Sahoo from ICARDA, Egypt.
Dr. Maya RajNarayan Ray led a technical session where she explored the diverse applications of GIS, from agriculture and resource management to infrastructure development and slope stability analysis. She also delved into the data structure of GIS, offering a detailed explanation to enhance participants’ understanding.

Technical sessions on advanced techniques
Guest speakers Prof. Saroj Meena and Dr. Vikas Kumar Vidyarthi provided valuable insights into the integration of remote sensing and machine learning (ML) for land use and land cover (LU/LC) analysis and prediction.
Dr. Sucharita Pradhan discussed cutting-edge applications of RS and GIS technologies in watershed planning and management during the second session, emphasizing their significance in sustainable development.
Dr. Satiprasad Sahoo shared his expertise in water resource engineering, presenting the fundamentals of the RS process, including EMR spectrum and wavelength applications. His session was particularly appreciated for its practical approach.
Dr. Jitu Kujur, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, presented mementoes to the guest speakers as a token of gratitude. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Komal Kumari.
The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from graduate and postgraduate students, alongside senior professors such as Dr. Udai Kumar Singh, Dr. Nishikant Kisku, Dr. Brahmdeo Yadav, Dr. Komal Kumari, Prof. Iqbal Shaikh, Prof. Saroj Meena, and Prof. Prashant Ranjan Malviya. Their collective efforts contributed to making the event a significant success.
