New Delhi, Jan 3: The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a petition filed by the Jharkhand government seeking to remove the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as a party in the investigation into coal theft in Dhanbad and alleged police involvement.
The case originated from the Jharkhand High Court’s order for a CBI probe into the matter. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal and Jharkhand government counsel Pragya Singh Baghel represented the state government during the hearing.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has already submitted its response to the case. The matter was heard by a Supreme Court bench led by Justice Sandeep Mehta.

The first hearing of the case in the Supreme Court took place on October 18, during which the apex court stayed the Jharkhand High Court’s directive for a CBI inquiry. The stay on the CBI probe remains in effect until further orders.
Earlier, on October 3, the Jharkhand High Court ordered the CBI to investigate the police officers named as respondents in the case. This decision prompted the state government to approach the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s order.
With the Supreme Court’s intervention, the investigation into the alleged coal theft and police involvement in Dhanbad remains on hold for now.
