Ganderbal, Jan 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 6.4-kilometer-long Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonmarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was attended by Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The Sonamarg Tunnel project, spanning approximately 12 kilometres, was built at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore. It includes the 6.4-kilometer-long main Sonamarg tunnel, an escape tunnel, and access roads.

Situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel will provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg on the route to Leh, ensuring safe access to the Ladakh region. The tunnel features a 7.5-meter-wide parallel route for emergencies.

According to reports, the Z-Morh Tunnel is equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System, designed to efficiently regulate traffic. A dedicated escape tunnel has been included to ensure smooth traffic flow. The tunnel will provide year-round connectivity to the tourist town of Sonamarg.

Debris generated during the construction of the project has been utilized for roadside facilities and regional development. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has described the tunnel as an engineering marvel and a game-changer for the region.

Security tightened across the valley by security forces

In light of PM Modi’s visit to Kashmir, security forces have intensified measures across the valley. According to officials, deployments in sensitive areas have been increased, and numerous checkpoints have been set up at key intersections to conduct thorough vehicle inspections. Regular patrolling is also being carried out.

Before PM Modi’s arrival, his security team, including SPG officials, had taken charge of the inauguration site. Sharpshooters were deployed at sensitive locations, and aerial and technical surveillance was conducted using drones.
