Kolkata, Jan 20: A special court in Kolkata today sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment in the case of rape and murder of a trainee female doctor at the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On January 18, the Additional District and Sessions Judge of Sealdah Court, Anirban Das, found Roy guilty under Sections 64 (punishment for rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The case pertains to the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee on August 9 last year, whose body was found in a seminar room at the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
The defence lawyer of the accused appealed before the judge, stating that although this is an exceptional case, there should still be room for reform. The court must demonstrate why the accused is not deserving of reform or rehabilitation.

He said the prosecution must present evidence and provide reasons as to why the individual is not fit for reform and should be completely removed from society.
The main accused Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested the day after the incident.
The in-camera trial started on November 12, during which 50 witnesses were examined. The hearing in the case concluded on January 9.
The alleged crime sparked widespread outrage and prompted extended protests by junior doctors in Kolkata and across the nation, calling for justice for the victim and improved security measures in state-run hospitals.
