THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Jan 30: The Supreme Court has ruled that only candidates who have passed the Jharkhand Teacher Eligibility Test (JTET) will be eligible for appointment as assistant teachers in the state.

The court’s decision, issued on Thursday, bars candidates who have cleared the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) from participating in the recruitment process.

This ruling comes as a major relief for JTET-qualified candidates, while it deals a setback to those who applied for the recruitment process without clearing the JTET exam.

The case was heard by a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Rajesh Bindal.

It stemmed from a previous ruling by the Jharkhand High Court, which had permitted candidates with TET qualifications from other states or CTET certification to apply for 26,000 assistant teacher positions in Jharkhand.

The High Court’s decision was later challenged in the Supreme Court, leading to the latest ruling.

The petitioners were represented by senior advocate Gopal Shankar Narayanan and advocate Amritansh Vats.
