Ranchi, Feb 4: Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari announced several health initiatives on the occasion of World Cancer Day, including the establishment of a breast clinic in the state and plans for an expanded cancer care infrastructure.

During the event, Dr. Ansari shared that the Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, will soon lay the foundation for RIMS-2, and preparations are underway. He also mentioned that 300 new ambulances will be introduced soon, with motorcycle ambulances to be provided to village health workers, also known as ‘Sahiya Sisters,’ to ensure timely transportation of patients to hospitals.

He inaugurated the large-scale general cancer screening program in the IPH auditorium, Namkom, on the occasion of World Cancer Day, on Tuesday.

Cancer Hospital in Jharkhand and Awareness Programs

Dr. Ansari further highlighted the state’s initiative to establish a cancer hospital in Jharkhand, aiming to prevent residents from having to travel outside the state for treatment and avoiding financial burdens.

The government is working actively to combat cancer, with various awareness and screening programs already in progress to make Jharkhand cancer-free. Dr. Ansari emphasized that the state budget for this year will prioritize health-related improvements.

He also launched posters related to cancer prevention and awareness.

Measures to Prevent Cancer and Improve Health

The health minister introduced significant preventive measures, including a ban on the sale of plain pan masala in the state. He urged the youth to adopt healthier lifestyles to avoid diseases such as cancer.

Dr. Ansari also shared advice regarding mobile phone radiation, advising people not to keep their phones near their heads while sleeping.

Expanding Healthcare Facilities

In line with the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services, Dr. Ansari stated that five new super-specialty hospitals will soon be constructed in the state, with plans to establish one in each district.

He also stressed that despite the availability of high-quality services in government hospitals, some doctors continue to offer services in private hospitals, urging them to consider healthcare as a service rather than a business.

Empowering Health Workers

In recognition of the vital role played by ‘Sahiya Sisters’ in spreading awareness and providing healthcare services at the grassroots level, the state government is set to distribute the latest tablets to these workers.

This will aid them in their tasks and help them quickly report any suspected cancer cases for timely intervention and treatment. Dr. Ansari also mentioned that the state government provides financial assistance for cancer treatment through the Chief Minister’s Serious Illness Scheme.

Free Ultrasound and Medical Services for Pregnant Women

Additionally, Dr. Ansari announced that the state will soon provide free medicines, health check-ups, and ultrasound services for pregnant women.

He also stressed that any form of abuse toward doctors would not be tolerated, reiterating that private hospitals should not pressurize families to pay bills after a patient’s death and should instead waive them.

Statewide Cancer Screening and Vaccination Drive

At the event, Abu Imran, Director of the National Health Mission, emphasized the importance of early cancer detection. He announced that a cancer screening initiative will be launched across all health centers and ‘Ayushman Arogya Mandirs’ in the state. The government will also administer cervical cancer vaccines to girls aged 9 to 14.

Special Focus on Children’s Health

Dr. Lal Manji, Nodal Officer of the NCD Cell, stated that oral, breast, and cervical cancer screening will be conducted at all health centers across the state. Early detection is crucial for better control and treatment of cancer, and cooperation from all sections of society is necessary to make Jharkhand cancer-free.

Theme of World Cancer Day 2025: United by Unique

Dr. Irfan Ansari concluded by highlighting this year’s theme for World Cancer Day 2025-2027, “United by Unique.” This theme stresses the importance of collective efforts in the fight against cancer. Dr. Ansari also emphasized the need for regular check-ups and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to reduce cancer risks.

Event Attendees

The event was attended by key figures such as Dr. C.K. Shahi, Director of Health Services, and Mridu Gupta, CEO of CAPED, along with various health workers, including Sahiya Bahins, from across the state.
