Jamshedpur, March 13: Tata Steel Meramandali (TSM), located in Narendrapur village of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, launched its fleet of electric buses as a demonstration of the company’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation for its employees.

Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, and Uttam Singh, Vice President, Operations, TSM, inaugurated a bus bay with charging facilities and flagged off the buses in the presence of senior officials.

Phase-Wise Implementation and Environmental Impact

As part of this green initiative, 20 electric buses will ply inside the plant premises to ensure daily intra-plant movement for employees in the first phase.

This transition is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 500 tonnes of CO2 annually, aligning with Tata Steel’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2045.

Chanakya Chaudhary said, “The Electric Buses and Bus Bay are the next step towards Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainability across its value chain. It will not only reduce our carbon footprint but will also enhance employee convenience and efficiency of our intra-plant transport.”

Advancing Sustainability in Operations

Commenting on the latest initiative, Uttam Singh, Vice President – Operations, TSM, said, “This launch marks another milestone in embracing sustainability in our day-to-day operations. The Meramandali plant already has 15 EV cars for intra-plant movement of employees, and now these electric buses will further benefit both our workforce and the environment.”

The newly established EV Bus Bay features two charging stations, each equipped with 12 charging units, along with four maintenance pits, storage rooms, and an administrative building that includes multiple offices and washrooms.

The electric buses are fitted with advanced battery systems and a range of innovative sustainability features, providing eco-friendly and comfortable transport for users.
