New Delhi, March 19: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) is set to organize a three-day meeting for 700 district Congress committee presidents from across the country. Reports suggest that the meeting will be held in three batches on March 27-28 and April 3 in Delhi.

Pilot project to be implemented in Gujarat

According to sources, the primary objective of the meeting is to implement a new organizational framework. The Congress believes that this will help strengthen the party’s machinery at the grassroots level.

According to sources, this initiative’s pilot project is set to be implemented in Gujarat, where Assembly elections are scheduled for 2027. The meeting will emphasize giving District Congress committees’ (DCC) presidents a key role in candidate selection and strengthening the organization.

AICC meeting of General Secretaries and In-Charges held yesterday

The decision was made during a meeting of AICC general secretaries and in-charges held yesterday, March 18. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, were also present at the meeting. Discussions were held on the organizational strengthening framework prepared by an informal group of leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh described the meeting as a historic step toward empowering the party’s district units and giving the organization a new direction. He emphasized that the party’s goal is to strengthen its presence at the grassroots level.

Congress eyes 2027 Gujarat Assembly polls

Gujarat has been a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the past three decades and is also the home state of Prime Minister Modi.

It is believed that if Congress manages to achieve success in Gujarat, it could challenge the BJP’s invincible image and strengthen Congress’s position at the national level. The party aims to use Gujarat as a pilot project, as indicated by the recent AICC meeting and Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

Congress still retains its traditional voter base in Gujarat, particularly in rural areas, tribal regions, and among certain urban voters. In the 2017 Assembly elections, the party won 77 seats. However, in the 2022 elections, it suffered a setback, securing only 17 seats.

The party believes that if it can increase its vote share by 5-10%, it stands a strong chance of coming to power in the state.
