The controversy erupted after a video of Ponmudy’s comments surfaced and drew criticism from several quarters, including DMK MP Kanimozhi, who termed his remarks vulgar and unacceptable. She emphasized that such language was condemnable, regardless of the context.

The BJP also seized on the controversy, with Tamil Nadu BJP Vice-President Narayanan Thirupathy demanding Ponmudy’s dismissal from the cabinet and calling for his arrest.
