BIT Mesra holds workshop on biodiversity preservation

Ranchi, April 26: The Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra organized a workshop on the theme “Biodiversity: Preserving Nature for a Sustainable Future.” Speakers from various universities and institutions across the country shared their perspectives and highlighted key aspects of biodiversity conservation.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Member Secretary of the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board, Sanjeev Kumar, served as the chief guest. He emphasized that the root cause of climate change lies in the lack of harmony in the use of natural resources.

Dean Dr. Raju Poddar, Head of Environmental Engineering Dr. Bindu Lal, workshop organizer Dr. Sukalyan Chakraborty, and Dr. S.C. Santra from the Department of Environmental Engineering, Kalyani University, were among the notable speakers who addressed the event.

On this occasion, the Biodiversity E-Register of the BIT campus was also released.

Focus on Nature-Based Lifestyles and Biodiversity Management

In his address, Sanjeev Kumar stressed the need to adopt a nature-based lifestyle. He mentioned that an action plan with 23 targets has been developed for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

He also highlighted the importance of water conservation, organic farming, research and training initiatives, soil erosion prevention, and the identification and protection of pollinators.

Dr. S.C. Santra elaborated on sustainable biodiversity management and explained how environmental engineering solutions can support biodiversity conservation.

Expert Insights on Biodiversity Challenges

Dr. P.K. Mishra from the Department of Botany, Vinoba Bhave University (VBU), Hazaribagh, focused on the conservation of native plant species and the floral aspects of biodiversity.

Dr. Bhaskar Singh from the Department of Environmental Science, Central University of Jharkhand, provided an analytical overview of environmental challenges and discussed how to align bioenergy development with the Biodiversity Act.

Hari Shankar Lal, Technical Officer at the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board, shared detailed insights into the legal and administrative framework of biodiversity governance.

Poster Presentation Competition and Awards

A poster presentation session was also organized, featuring participation from institutions such as Xavier University, BIT Mesra, the Institute of Forest Productivity, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Bankura University (West Bengal), and the National Biodiversity Authority. Participants presented their research and views on biodiversity management.

  • Second Prize: Pallavi Bharti, Intern at Jharkhand Biodiversity Board & Bankura University, West Bengal
  • Third Prize: Manisha Shankar, BIT Mesra
