Daltonganj, May 1: A 60-year-old munshi of a construction agency identified as Ayub Ahmad was gunned down by around half a dozen Maoist ultras last night at Orsa under the Mahuadanr police station in Latehar district.

Latehar SP Kumar Gaurav told the Jharkhand Story correspondent today, “The munshi was dragged out of his house last night around 9 pm where he was gunned down.”

Road Construction Work Targeted

The Maoist ultras later torched two road-making tools like JCB and other machines.

Gaurav said, “No killing took place at the construction site. The two road-making tools were torched which were parked and not at the construction site.”

The state road construction department is building a metallic road from Hamee to Orsa.

The Maoists did two things together. First, they killed the munshi. Two, they set ablaze the two vehicles.

Police: Dual Attack Reflects Maoists’ Desperation and Weakening Grip

Sources said the Maoists generally do one serious crime at one point in time. If they set afire vehicles, they don’t take life. And if they kill, they don’t torch vehicles. Here it was both. The Maoists here indulged in macabre sense of destruction of life and property.

Latehar SP Kumar Gaurav explained this saying, “The Maoists have lost space and teeth both. And so they want to prove themselves to be as inane and barbaric as ever. The gunning down of a 60-year-old man by the Maoists is a case of their extreme desperation.”

The place of occurrence is 15 km away from the nearest police station, Mahuadanr.

Difficult Terrain Aids Maoists

Its topography is not only arduous but in a way helpful to the Maoists more than the police, and this the Maoists exploited to the hilt.

Sources said Maoists sitting atop are always at an advantageous position.

Latehar SP further said police believe the killing and the arson were the handiwork of Maoists, namely Kundan and Manish.

The local police have registered the case, and the investigation has begun.

Mahuadanr has always been a soft target of the Maoists in the past.
