Dhanbad, June 4: The Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad is set to host a week-long Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) course on Inverse Methods and Machine Learning in Geosciences from June 23 to 29.

According to institute officials, the course will be conducted at the Executive Development Centre under the joint leadership of Dr. Saumen Maiti, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Geophysics, and Prof. Mrinal K. Sen, a renowned geophysicist from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Maiti will serve as the course coordinator, while Prof. Sen will join as the international faculty expert.

Participation in the course is limited to 50 seats. Interested candidates can register until the deadline of June 16, 2025.

Focus on Cutting-Edge Techniques in Geosciences

The GIAN course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of how inverse methods and machine learning are transforming data interpretation and decision-making in geosciences. These advanced techniques help geoscientists analyze complex subsurface processes using data gathered from surface, borehole, and remote sensing technologies.

“Participants will explore both deterministic and stochastic frameworks for solving inverse problems,” said an official, adding that the course will cover advanced regularization strategies, Bayesian inference, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods.

Hands-On Learning for Real-World Application

The program is designed to strike a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Along with lectures, attendees will engage in hands-on training sessions focused on real-world applications—such as solving inverse problems, managing noisy datasets, and quantifying uncertainty in predictions.

The course offers a unique opportunity for professionals, researchers, and students to deepen their expertise in one of the most dynamic areas of geoscientific research.
