Ranchi, June 4: Tribal organisations across Jharkhand observed a statewide bandh on Wednesday in protest against the construction of the Sirmatoli-MECON flyover ramp near a sacred Sarna Sthal.

The bandh, called jointly by the Adivasi Bachao Morcha and the Kendriya Sarna Sthal Sirmatoli Bachao Morcha, witnessed large-scale participation, particularly in Ranchi and surrounding districts.

From early morning, protestors blocked roads in areas such as Kanke, Tatisilwe, and near Galaxy Mall, where barricades brought traffic to a complete standstill. Demonstrators, many dressed in traditional tribal attire, marched in rallies, demanding that the ramp be relocated to preserve the sanctity of the religious site.

Protesters argue that the ongoing construction poses a threat to the cultural and spiritual identity of the tribal community and obstructs the traditional Sarhul procession route, especially affecting the Khodha, key participants in the religious observance.

Essential Services Disrupted Despite Exemptions

Despite prior assurances from the administration that emergency vehicles and wedding processions would not be hindered, protestors reportedly stopped all types of vehicles, including ambulances and wedding convoys, near Holiday Home in Kanke.

Tyres were set ablaze, and stranded commuters, including wedding guests, expressed frustration over the hours-long blockade.

The bandh severely disrupted normal life in several parts of the state. Schools, colleges, and shops remained shut, and public transport services were largely affected. Police forces were deployed at key locations to manage law and order.

A day prior to the bandh, tribal groups had organised a torch rally in Ranchi, starting from Jaipal Singh Stadium and concluding at Albert Ekka Chowk, where they raised slogans demanding immediate action.

The protestors have vowed to continue their agitation until the ramp is shifted away from the Sarna site, calling upon the government to respect tribal sentiments and religious sanctity.
