PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, June 13: The southwest monsoon is gathering pace, with favourable conditions setting the stage for its further advance into central and eastern India—including key regions such as Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha—within the next 48 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of unsettled weather, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several parts of the state.

According to the IMD bulletin released on June 13, isolated areas in the eastern part of the state (excluding the northern region) are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h.

Weather activity is expected to intensify on June 14, with isolated thunderstorms likely across the entire state. Wind gusts may strengthen to 40–50 km/h.

The Northern Limit of the Monsoon (NLM) currently stretches from 17.0°N/55°E to 30°N/85°E, passing through key locations such as Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, and Balurghat. This marks a significant progression of the monsoon deeper into the Indian subcontinent.

Enhancing this development is a cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and tilting southwestward with altitude. This synoptic system is likely to boost rainfall activity in the region over the coming days.

Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly in lightning-prone and open areas, and to stay updated with official weather advisories. Farmers, too, are encouraged to align their agricultural plans with the anticipated onset of monsoon showers.
