His political journey began as a student leader with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the 1970s and 1980s, where he led ideological battles against Left-leaning student groups at Osmania University, even facing violent attacks for his nationalist stance.

His ABVP tenure (1977–1985) saw him serve in key roles, including State Committee Member and City President, while pursuing legal education.

Born into a humble Brahmin family rooted in Osmania University’s academic culture, Rao has consistently prioritised public service over personal comfort, as per the release.

Over the decades, he has held several significant roles in the BJP—including BJYM Secretary, Legal Cell Convenor, State General Secretary, and Party Spokesperson—earning a reputation for strategic thinking and consensus building.
