New Delhi, July 14: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a petition filed by the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) challenging the extension of the ban imposed on the organisation.
A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta declined to entertain the plea, effectively upholding the decision of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal passed in February 2024.

SIMI had approached the apex court contesting the tribunal’s order that extended the ban on the organisation for another five years.

The tribunal, in its findings, stated that SIMI was promoting radical ideologies among youth and maintained links with terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and al-Qaeda.
The organisation has been accused of involvement in multiple terrorist incidents across India. In January 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs extended the ban under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, citing national security concerns.

Previously, the Ministry had issued Gazette Notification No. S.O. 564(E) dated January 31, 2019, imposing a five-year ban on SIMI, which has now been renewed for another term. With the Supreme Court’s decision, the ban remains firmly in place.
