New Delhi, July 22: Leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) staged a strong protest on Tuesday against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, accusing the process of stripping people of their right to vote ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Gathered on the steps of Parliament at Makar Dwar, top opposition figures including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav held up placards with messages like “Death of Democracy”, “Quit SIR”, and “Stealing of Indian Rights,” demanding that the revision be halted immediately.
The opposition’s demand for a debate on the SIR has intensified tensions in Parliament, with INDIA bloc MPs pressing for a discussion in both Houses. The issue has sparked concerns about voter disenfranchisement and transparency in the electoral process.
Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 12 PM soon after proceedings began, with Speaker Om Birla suspending the Lower House for the second consecutive day of the Monsoon Session.
This came after opposition parties submitted adjournment motion notices, seeking urgent debates on matters of public concern, including the Bihar voter roll revision.
